Prohibitory orders revoked in Goa
Special Correspondent
PANAJI:
The Goa Government on Wednesday revoked the prohibitory orders imposed on the riot-affected areas of Sanvordem-Curchorem.
Around 100 families, mostly migrant labourers belonging to a minority community, who fled the area, have started returning. The Government has taken up rehabilitation work with the help of the police.
Riots broke out in the twin towns on Friday as fallout of the damage caused by miscreants to a disputed abandoned structure belonging to the minority community. The riots were brought under control by the Central Reserve Police Force, which was deployed on Sunday to assist the police.
The Government said the estimated loss of property was Rs. 2.5 crore. Subhash Shirodkar, Minister for Panchayati Raj and Social Welfare, who heads the rehabilitation committee, said based on complaints it was found that most of the property belonged to the minority community. Public property, including two buses belonging to the Government-run Kadamba Transport Corporation, two police vehicles and a vehicle of the Fire Services and a public transport bus, were partially burnt.
